The Fishing

Tigerfishing - Ilombe Island Camp From June the waters of the Zambezi start dropping and draining off the flood plains. In doing so all the baitfish that have been living happily on the flood plains are forced to drop back into the main river. This puts the tigerfish into a feeding frenzy, which continues until September/October. The fish are hungry and aggressive and the fishing is super exciting! We will fish two fishermen to a boat together with a local guide - we will fish towards the banks and also get our flies down deep! This is very exciting, adrenalin pumping fishing at its very best. Tigerfish have cast iron jaws and are extremely tough street fighters, who usually get aerial at some point during the fight!

Tackle

Tigerfishing - Ilombe Island Camp It is best to use #8, #9 or #10 rods, a good disc drag reel and very fast sinking lines. We usually use straight 20lb to 30lb Maxima or fluoro leaders and flies - mainly #2/0 dark Clouser style flies - with wire traces. Upstream Flyfishing does have a comprehensive range of Tigerfish flies, fast sinking lines etc. available in store.

Accommodation/meals

Tigerfishing - Ilombe Island Camp We are accommodated in luxury tents, with their own bathrooms, on a sharing basis. Meals are taken at the pub, deck and dining area. Stanford, the chef, is an absolute magician - he produces the most incredible meals out of his simple kitchen and he always has a huge smile on his face! The rest of the staff are very friendly and super-efficient!

Last year 2014 our Group 1 fishing was spectacular not huge numbers but really monster fish! For the very first time on any one of my Tigerfishing trips everyone caught double digit fish! Tim landed a brut of 19.5lbs and Rachel a mighty fine 15lber! Group 2 was tough the wind pumped but some good fish were landed. Martin got a hog of 16lbs down the rapids and other big fish were caught. Most of us had our chances and LOST 'busses', so I am really excited about the next trips.

There is also good birding in the area and a real opportunity to see quite a bit of game. On a number of days we came across elephant having a swim and playing in the river. Often we parked off, watched and photographed them!
