The Ketta Crab a collaboration between Beast Brushes and Al Simson of Kettafly. The great thing about this design, is that Al is an experienced fisherman who doesn't test his flies in test tank, he puts them in front of fish. Al is a Fisherman, Artist, Apparel company, commercial fly tyer and guide... thats a great pedigree in a fly designer. The Ketta Crab is a fantastic imitation of a Sargassum Crab, or is just as at home as a ghost crab, Fiddler Crab or Mangrove Crab . The Ketta Crab is designed to sit both forward and sideways on the hook without the legs getting the way of the leader. Al has been testing this pattern for a few weeks before anyone has seen them outside of the collab. Cray Craws, these claws are designed to be a caricature of both Saltwater Crays, and Freshwater yabbies or Crawdads. The beauty in this design is not only in the way they look, but more so in the way they swim. The Cray Craws ( like the rest of out range) have thickened and thin sections that allow the material to move where it's meant to. This means a set of claws that will articulate up and down as the fly swims but won't cross over. The well thought out articulation sections also enhance the flies ability to ride hook point up ( or down) as the claws won't create drag that influences an undesirable hook flip.  These realistic claws will suit both sinking flies and poppers, and in both situations, will not foul, carry extra water weight or get hard as they dry out. The Mercules Cab is that defensive crab that you can drag along the bottom or tie to slow sink or float if you like . Tied in North / South, this fly offers the tyer a range of carapace options like the ones seen here in both stacked Deerhair, or stacked BB Fibre as examples.  Fished hard on the bottom, bounced over weed and rocks, tied to slow sink or float this design will quickly be recognised by fish as a prey item.  The Mercules Crab fished this way, offers that classic start stop presentation style, that imitates that crab who aint taking no crap from the predatory fish as it stands its ground. The Mercules can also be used as a lightweight presentation with a floating carapace like a Sargassum Crab. The only glue used in these pictures is for the eyes, the rest is all tied in. The weight options can vary from the full control of placement and weight Tungsten putty offers, or the tyer can chose to tie in Dumbells eyes anywhere along the shank.  At this stage only a 45mm (absolute wides part, tip to tip of the legs) is available in 4 colours. The Muineer or fleeing crab design enables you, the angler to strip your crab fly in a natural fashion when you need too. The large prominent realistic claw trailing the fly is a huge trigger point for fish to identify this prey item as a crab, which arguably will reduce hesitation and a faster reaction bite. The design enhances what we already know about how this style of legs travel through the air and the water... Landing hook point up and a fly that cuts through the wind is no problem for the Mutineer design.  There is a free and publicly accessible tying video for the Mutineer at www.flatscraft.com The Mutineer has a tying tab which enables easy lashing to the hook shank... important for fish like permit which will make short work of materials simply glued on.  The Mutineer lends itself to surface, slow sinking and floating presentations. The materials is flexible and your thread will not cut it. The material also accepts marker pens, glue (E6000) and high quality resin really well. The Split Crab design is our most versatile design yet. These legs lend themselves to a huge variety of crab flies and concepts… From Crabs that need to be anchored on the bottom, to floating and slow sinking crab flies. The Split Crab can also be tied on any length hook, depending on the design you want to tie. Simply cut the joining strip and tie in two halves to suit your hook, or just use the trailing legs, or just use the claws. The Split Crab also suits a range of carapaces and weight options. This design has taken us a lot of time.. your looking at version number 6. The design is perfectly balanced so that if you decide to use the whole set of legs, the drag is even on the descent and on the strip…. Nothing worse than a crab fly that doesn’t do what you want it to do for that one opportunity you have been waiting for all day, year or your whole life !

We are huge fans of Dave Skok's Strong Arm Merkin, you cannot argue with the results. The fascinating thing about this fly is its use of Buoyancy and Drag  to keep the fly where it needs to be as opposed to using weight like traditional Merkins and shrimps. We also know that the claw and the way it's prepared then tied, has a huge part to do with this. Dave originally ties his with large ultra chenille, tying the chenille around the bend of the hook and setting the arm and claw in resin so that it doesn't move. Also being quoted saying "Do not be random or sloppy about the angle and straightness of the claw as it has great impact on how the fly swims and sinks." This claw is an alternative to the work needed for the Chenille, no resin, no guess work as to how far to tie around the bend, no smell (no resin or glue), designed to use it's drag in the water during it's descent to keep it hook point up, consistent size, faster and dead straight every time. We feel that it respects the ingenuity that Dave showed with developing the Strong...

The Fiddler Crab is a staple food source for many intertidal species, and it's one of the most requested patterns we have been asked for at Flats Craft. The Fiddler is one we took a lot of time to get right (over 8 months of prototyping) so that it performed as intended in the water, and then we made it look the part. Finally we have come up with what we believe is both a hydrodynamically correct, and anatomically correct caricature of the many Fiddler Crabs that are found around the entire world.  The Fiddler is (as you would know) known for its large leading claw on male crabs.. When in transit while feeding or fleeing, the Fiddler leads with its dominant claw across what would be its chest. This was determined by us and the many who we sought out input from as the most realistic way to represent the species. It is also known that they will use that claw when there is no water on the flat to sit in front of their hole and wave that massive fiddle to attract a female... but that only happens when the flat is dry... dry flat .. no fish......

The Sargasmo is heavily based on the Sargassum Crab, but this design not only looks great, it has some clever features that help it swim perfectly as a swimming crab. Essentially, this is a fleeing crab that is tied straight on ( North / South... the hook bend is between the eyes) so that is suits the very popular topwater Sargassum crab craze. Not limited to the Sargassum crab, the Sargasmo can be tied to suit a range of depths and carapaces.  The Sargasmo features legs that all face in a direction away from the tow point and arms that extend to indicate a feeling crab This not only looks the part but ensures the fly rides perfectly straight in the water at an speed, preventing twisting or any unnatural look that can make a fish reject a fly. The swim paddles are super thin (only .6mm thick) and offer little resistance to fold under ( on a hook point down floater application) just like real swim paddles. The frame has a bigger target point to stack materials like Deerhair or Polypropylene due to the increased tying difficulty of navigating through the legs that results a much more targeted flat...
