In this updated and revised (2024) version of the first release of the The Feather Mechanic, Gordon presents his deepest thoughts about how he sees tying.
The idea is to get people moving past the ‘sbs’ (Step by Step) mentality and getting them to tie flies logically as opposed to just following steps. Everything you put in a fly needs to be motivated. Form follows function. You need to understand what you’re doing and why you’re doing it.
If you can do that you’ll be tying flies that catch more fish because they make more sense! “The Feather Mechanic” is an idea and presents the reader with an alternative approach to tying.
If your vibe is as much street as it is stream and if you prefer clean lines over bold graphics, then our The Mission 5-panel jockey cap is for you. With a classic sporty camper shape, it features The Mission logo, a black clip closure, four black, metal eyelets, soft buckram and a matching undervisor to handle glare bouncing off the water.

Rock on and fish on? With our black Wave-rider long-sleeve T, you might just get that balance right.
Made from 100% combed cotton, with a soft-to-touch feel, this super comfortable T comes in a strong black with a stylized red The Mission logo on the chest.
For those of you who want to blend into the bundu, we present to you the (mostly) muted vibes of the Blood Sage Ripstop Snapback. Think of it from a fish’s point of view. All it sees is the usual wall of blue (sky) and green (bush) above the water save for a red smudge (a locust’s ass), then all of a sardine it’s hooked, hopefully by you.
As for that red smudge? That’s one of our Flavour Saver patches for stashing and drying your flies.

Greetings and salutations to our new unstructured snapback featuring a classic shape and a front-pip rope for extra pizzaz. As for the artwork by Conrad Botes – you might ask what exactly is a “beautiful thing of beauty”?
It came from something Herman Botes said in Issue 32’s “No Country For Old Men” story. Utterly gobsmacked by the Clanwilliam yellowfish he was about to release, he was at a loss for words and could merely blurt out the now legendary tautological line, “It’s a beautiful thing! Beautiful thing of beauty!” For you, a BTOB could be anything – a fish, a view, a sunrise, a bug dancing above the water in a shaft of light… Maybe it’s even you, you handsome devil.

Featuring the iconic The Mission wallpaper design by Conrad Botes, the versatile Original Ecostretch Buff® in Sea Mint is as at home on a river or creek as it is on baking-hot flats or up a frosty fjord.
We don’t have to school you on the real McCoy of multifunction neckwear, but in case you’re from Mars, Buff® offers UPF50-certified sun protection and is made with 95% recycled content. Thanks to its seamless four-way stretch construction, it is versatile and elastic, so this neck gaiter can be worn in different positions for a better protection in cool environments – around your neck, over your face, under your eyes, as a bandana, a beanie, a hairband for your man bun, a wrist covering… Whatever floats your tube.
More than just formidably functional, The Mission Buff® is soft and seamless, making it pleasant to the touch and comfortable to wear when fishing. You’re welcome.
All hail his noodly greatness, all hail Cthulhu! Our new unstructured snapback featuring a classic shape and a front-pip rope for extra juju, boasts a Conrad Botes artwork of the majestic cephalopod deity, Cthulhu.
As at home predicting the winner of the next Rugby World Cup (3-peat baby!) as it is bringing you luck on the water or at the bar, this beauty will soon dominate as your new favourite hat.

Inspired by the original John Deere truckers, we roped in designer Nic Symes for this beaut of a cap inspired by that lurking feeling when fishing African rivers that something with teeth (AKA a flat dog, or crocodile) is watching you. Whether your fishing involves flat dogs or not, this cap…rocks.

Like Lefty’s Deceiver, this cap is… deceptive. That subtle corduroy-like ribbing is not hot and heavy as you might expect from anything that looks like corduroy. In fact our 5-panel, unstructured Flavour Saver truckers are light and airy, sporting a classic trucker design with an unstructured, relaxed fit that moulds to the shape of your magnificent melon. The adjustable snapback closure ensures a perfect, customisable fit for all head sizes, even Smokey Bear. The pièce de résistance? Our Flavour Saver badge on a velcro backing where you can keep your used flies handy in case they need to swim again.

Like most of what exists in The Mission’s ecosystem, the 100% cotton Handjob T is a bit… skeef.
You know… a smidgen left field, a tad off. That’s why we love it. If you do too, then double awkward fist bumps to you and the rest of our tribe of fly fishing misfits .
White knuckle your way to the ‘ADD TO BASKET’ if you want one.
Introducing Mr Floppy, a medium-wide brim, boonie-style hat in a washed mustard colour with The Mission’s Flavour Saver patch for stashing flies, and an adjustable drawstring.
Just as at home bundu-bashing along rivers and across flats as it is as the beach or a braai.
